Lenny Brickens, who served as the Missouri Valley Conference coordinator for baseball umpires since 2006, died on October 30. Brickens began Umpires for Youth in 1971 and took over the Indianapolis Umpires Association in 1973.  He recruited, trained and scheduled umpires in central Indiana throughout all of those years.  During his 40-year career, Brickens umpired all levels of baseball and had several appearances in the NCAA Divisions I, II and III Baseball Championships.

Eastern Illinois assistant women’s basketball coach Jackie Moore died November 4 … Former Texas A&M-Commerce athletics director and chair of the physical education department Jesse J. Hawthorne died November 7. Hawthorne joined the faculty in September 1951 and was named chair of the physical education department and AD in 1953. He carried out those dual roles for 31 years until his retirement in 1984.
