Ron Galbreath, who took last season off after suffering a stroke in spring 2008, announced his retirement as head women’s basketball coach at Geneva. He coached men’s basketball at Westminster (Pennsylvania) for 25 years before accepting the Geneva women’s post in 2002 and earlier coached at Clarion. He will continue to work as an instructor in physical education through the fall semester.

Coaches

Baseball Scott Virgulak promoted from assistant to head coach at Rhode Island College, succeeding Jay Grenier, who resigned.

Women’s basketball Golf Stefanie Maynard-Gray named assistant women’s coach at Stephen F. Austin. She is a former golf student-athlete at Texas-Pan American.

Softball Catherine Beuerle joined the staff at Shenandoah, where the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient recently completed her playing career. She is assisting with the team while pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy.

Swimming and divingTony Lisa returned for a second stint as head men’s and women’s coach at Rowan, after two years as an assistant at Army. Lisa, who replaces Miki Bogert, coached at Rowan for 30 years before moving to Army, where he also served as recruiting coordinator.

TennisAndy Christodoulou named head women’s coach at Siena.

Conferences

Christine Halstead named assistant director of championships and compliance at the Horizon League after serving on the NCAA Eligibility Center staff.

Deaths

Richard “Bud” Kohler, a football student-athlete at Pittsburg State during the 1949 and 1950 seasons who was honored as a Kansas Educator of the Year during his 35-year tenure as a high school teacher, died September 13 at age 79.
