Tom Porten has been named men’s golf coach at Northern Illinois. Porten was the men’s golf coach at Akron in 2006-07 and spent one season as the associate head coach at Kent State in 2007-08. He was the men’s golf coach for 15 years at Cleveland State, where he also created and led the women’s program.

Ryan McCall, who would have been a senior cross country student-athlete at Tampa this fall, died August 19 … Preston Hirten, a junior on the Mary Washington men’s soccer team, died August 18  ... Former Baylor football player Ken Casner died. He was 79.
