The RecordPennsylvania hired former assistant Mike Murphy as head men’s lacrosse coach. For the past seven years, Murphy has been in charge of the program at Haverford, where he led the program to two NCAA tournament berths and its first Centennial Conference regular-season title. Formerly the defensive coordinator (2001) and offensive coordinator (2002) at Penn, Murphy also formerly was an assistant at Virginia and Brown.
Other transactions
Men’s basketball assistants – Gannon added Tim Fralick as an assistant coach. Fralick, who has been an assistant at Ashland for the past five seasons, replaces Ryan Price, who accepted a coaching position at Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Men’s and women’s cross country – Eileen McAllister was chosen as interim men’s and women’s cross country coach at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. McAllister has been an assistant cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at the school since 2004.
Football – Jake Box, defensive coordinator, linebackers and wide receivers coach at MacMurray, was elevated to head coach. Box, who is entering his second season with the program, replaces Kyle Sweeny.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Kathy Jacobs was named as head women’s tennis coach at Peace, succeeding Cy King, who resigned after six years in May.
Men’s and women’s track and field – Southern Illinois-Edwardsville tabbed Kareem Jackson as interim head the track and field coach to succeed David Astrauskas, who became an assistant coach at Wisconsin. Jackson has been an assistant with the men’s and women’s track and field program for one season.
Conferences
The Pacific-10 Conference named Rachel Caton and Victor Rodriguez as 2009-10 communications interns. Caton is 2009 graduate of Southern California and Rodriguez is a 2009 graduate of Arizona.
Notables
The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame recently announced the six members of the class of 2010: Leta Andrews, the winningest high school girls’ basketball coach in the country with a 1,312-282 career record in 47 seasons; Teresa Edwards, the most decorated men’s or women’s Olympic basketball player with four gold medals and one bronze medal in five Olympics; Rebecca Lobo, former Connecticut women’s basketball standout and current ESPN sideline reporter and color analyst; Gloria Ray, who oversaw the Lady Vols’ first national championship in 1987 as the first women’s athletics director at Tennessee and led the drive to plan and construct the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame; Teresa Witherspoon, who as one of the original WNBA players started 220 straight games for the New York Liberty and guided the team to three WNBA championship appearances; and Chris Weller, head coach at Maryland for 26 seasons, who is one of only a few men’s or women’s coaches to spend 25 seasons at the same institution.
