The RecordFormer Pacific-10 Conference Commissioner Wiles Hallock died at his home Monday. He was 91. Hallock was commissioner of the conference from 1971-83. Before joining the then-Pac-8 Conference, Hallock was commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference and had held positions in college athletics at the NCAA, California and Wyoming.
Other transactions
Athletics directors – Missouri Southern State selected Northern Arizona Associate AD Jared Bruggeman as its next director of athletics, replacing Sallie Beard, who retired at the end of June. Bruggeman has been at Northern Arizona for the past four years, serving as the school’s compliance director and overseeing the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country programs and equipment room. He was in charge of compliance and student life at North Dakota for four years before that.
Associate athletics directors – Boston U. promoted Dan Satter from assistant to associate athletics director for marketing communications.
Coaches
Baseball – San Francisco State hired Mike Cummins as its new head coach, replacing Tony Dress, who resigned earlier this summer. Cummins, a Santa Clara alumnus, had a 24-year coaching and playing stint at his alma mater, including a four-year run as head coach from 1997-2001.
Women’s basketball assistants – Boston U. appointed Christine Kinneary as director of operations.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Western Michigan appointed Suzie Grech as interim head women’s coach, effective immediately, after former head coach Mike Haines resigned. Grech has spent the last two seasons as an assistant.
Softball assistants – Mount Olive added North Florida alumna Katie Field as an assistant.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Former Miami (Ohio) head women’s coach Howard Joffe was named to the same post at Maryland.
Men’s and women’s track and field – Kelly Phillips has been named the head women’s cross country/track and field coach at Miami (Ohio). Phillips had been an assistant women’s cross country/track and field coach at Purdue.
Staff
Assistant athletic trainer – Holy Cross named Brian Atkins an assistant athletic trainer. Atkins spent the last two years as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Cornell.
Compliance – Boston U. promoted Joe Nicastro from coordinator to director of compliance.
Deaths
Nadine Gearin, the first head women’s basketball coach at Tennessee-Martin, died July 12 after a long illness. Gearin was 73. She coached the Lady Pacers from 1969-78. Current Tennessee coach Pat Head Summitt (1971-74) is among Gearin’s former players.
