Clyde “Doc” Partin, director of athletics at Emory from 1966 to 1983 and chair of the university’s health and physical education department through 1986, died Tuesday. He was 84. Emory expanded its varsity sports offerings during his tenure, including the addition in 1975 of the women’s tennis program, which eventually won five Division III Women’s Tennis Championships team titles. The school also built its Woodruff Physical Education Center under his leadership. He remained on Emory’s physical education faculty until his retirement in 2002.

Transactions

Director of athletics – George Mason extended the contract of Tom O’Connor through 2013. O’Connor, in his 15th year at the school, is a former chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and served on the Division I Management Council.

Coaches

Baseball Tom Walter selected as head coach at Wake Forest after five seasons at New Orleans, where he coached teams to the Division I Baseball Championship in 2007 and 2008. He also has coached at George Washington … Dino Rosato named head coach at East Central after coaching last season at Bacone … Andrew Weimer named head coach at Utica. He has played professionally for the past six years … Jonathan Thomas selected as head coach at New Jersey City, his alma mater.

Golf Jan Dowling appointed head women’s coach at Florida after serving as an assistant on the staffs at Duke and Kent State … Gip Hoagland promoted to head men’s coach at Dayton, where he has been a volunteer assistant. He will succeed Chris Hale, who will assist the program on a volunteer basis.

LacrosseBrianne Tierney selected as head women’s coach at Lebanon Valley, which is establishing a new program. The former Colgate player and daughter of Denver head coach and former Princeton head coach Bill Tierney has been an assistant at California and Monmouth.

Conferences

Wole Oke named director of conference communications at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. He previously was an athletics administration intern/sports information assistant at Simmons.
