The RecordLongtime Alma women’s basketball coach Charlie Goffnet retired. Goffnet, who led the Scots to the school’s only national championship in 1992, will work in special projects for the college. He compiled a record of 334-217 in 22 seasons with Alma. Goffnet also coached at Texas, St. Thomas (Texas) and Central Michigan, his alma mater.

Coaches
Women’s basketball assistants – Army hired Shandrika Lee-Gerch, a former Pepperdine student-athlete and assistant coach at Cal Poly.
Men’s and women’s golf – Franklin Pierce replaced retiring men’s coach Owen Houghton with Greg Scerbinski. Scerbinski assisted Houghton last year and was a high school teacher for 34 years.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Ursinus appointed Jamie Steele to lead its men’s program. He had coached the team on an interim basis since March. He was an assistant at Haverford and head coach at Widener. He was a student-athlete at Gettysburg.
Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Dayton named Ricardo Lara to its men’s staff.
Men’s and women’s track and field – Kenneth Giles will lead both programs at Norfolk State. Ronda Berard will remain as head women’s coach, but Giles will oversee operations for both programs.
Deaths
Former Washington athletics director and football coach James Donald Owens died June 6. He was 82. A veteran of World War II, Owens played football at Oklahoma and was a part of the 1949 national championship team. He played professional football with the Baltimore Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers and joined Paul “Bear” Bryant’s coaching staff at Kentucky in 1951. He also was an assistant at Texas A&M before becoming Washington’s youngest head football coach in 1957.
