Pennsylvania named Andy Ma as head men’s and women’s fencing coach. He replaces David Micahnik, who retired after the 2008-09 season after 35 years in charge of the programs. For the past 15 years, Ma, an assistant at Penn from 1994-96 and from 2005-06, has been president and head fencing coach at the Fencing Academy of South Jersey, which has trained eight US National Fencing Team members during his tenure.

Other transactions

Senior woman administrators – Western Illinois awarded Lisa Melz, director of athletics academic services, additional responsibilities as senior woman administrator. Melz is an 11-year veteran of the athletics department.

Coaches

Women’s basketball – Tennessee Tech’s Amy Brown stepped down after three seasons as head coach and her 13th season on the Tech staff.

Women’s basketball assistant – Holy Cross added Mike Roux as an assistant coach. Roux has been an assistant at Southern New Hampshire for the last two seasons. Before that stint, he was an assistant women’s coach at Assumption for two seasons.

Men’s and women’s golfNathanael Petry resigned after three seasons as head men’s and women’s golf coach at Otterbein. Petry led both squads to an appearance at the 2009 NCAA Division III championships.

Women’s lacrosse assistants – Shenandoah tabbed Dennis Cox as an assistant women’s coach. Cox, who played four years of lacrosse and one year of football at Shenandoah, will become the program’s top assistant.

Men’s soccerCristian Da Silva resigned as head coach at New Jersey City to become head of player recruitment for Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls.

Men’s track and fieldArt Venegas stepped down after 10 years as head men’s coach at UCLA. Venegas, who spent 28 years with the program, guided the Bruins to a Pac-10 team championship and two West Region team titles.

Staff

ComplianceAnnie Shepard was hired as director of compliance at Western Illinois. For the past two years, she has been a compliance assistant at West Virginia.

Conferences

The MAAC hired Katie Miranto as director of championships and special events and appointed Tania Kennedy as assistant director of championships. Miranto spent the last year as a sports finance intern at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, and also volunteered for event management teams at the complex. Kennedy was a summer intern at the MAAC in 2008 and formerly was a secretary and camp counselor for the Edison Township Recreational Department … Carolyn Campbell-McGovern was promoted to deputy executive director at the Ivy League. Campbell-McGovern has been senior associate director of the league since 1993.

Deaths – Former NFL and Alcorn State quarterback Steve McNair was found shot to death Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee.
