Tennessee- Martin tabbed Darrin McClure the sixth head women’s volleyball coach in the program’s 39-year history. McClure served as the Skyhawks interim head coach for the 2008 season, in which he helped guide the program back to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since 2002 and formerly was an assistant coach with the program from 2005 to 2006.

 

Other transactions

Women’s basketballAnnie Ewing was hired as head coach at MacMurray. Ewing has coached freshman and varsity basketball at Ursuline Academy and Lutheran South (Missouri) High Schools in addition to serving as an associate attorney at Kozeney and McCubbin, LC, in Saint Louis.

FootballDoug Malone was named as the interim head coach at Presbyterian after head coach Bobby Bentley resigned to become the Spartanburg County (South Carolina) School District 5 athletics director. Malone, who ran the Blue Hose offensive line during the 2008 season, formerly was the offensive coordinator at Western Carolina, acting head coach at Tennessee Tech and head coach Wingate … Frank Spaziani was elevated to head coach at Boston College. Spaziani, a 13-year veteran of the coaching staff spent two seasons as running backs coach and the past 10 as defensive coordinator. In 2008, the Eagles ranked in the top 10 in the nation in seven defensive categories, including interceptions, turnovers gained, total defense, red zone defense, first downs allowed, rushing defense, and pass efficiency defense. In addition, junior linebacker Mark Herzlich was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

Football assistants – Elon promoted offensive line coach Rich Skrosky from run game coordinator to offensive coordinator and added Scott Sallach as pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Keith Gaither as wide receivers coach. While Skrosky enters his fourth season as the Phoenix offensive line coach, Sallach brings 15 years of experience as an assistant football coach, including the past six seasons at Princeton. Gaither returns his alma mater after assistant coaching stints at Winston-Salem State (2005-08), Tusculum (1998-99) and Greensboro (1997).

Men’s golf – Charlotte appointed assistant coach Adam Pry as interim head coach during the 2009 spring campaign, replacing Jamie Green, who has resigned to become head coach at Duke.

Conference – The Southland named Jim Donovan as a media services intern. Donovan, who most recently served as the sports editor for the McKinney Courier-Gazette, a daily newspaper in northern Collin County, Texas, will contribute to the conference’s communication efforts for all 17 sports and will be directly responsible for men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track and field.

Notables – San Jose State head football coach Dick Tomey was elected as president of the American Football Coaches Association in 2009. Tomey, who is entering his fifth season at San Jose State, moves up from serving as the AFCA’s first vice-president and succeeds outgoing president Tyrone Willingham, former head coach at Washington. Other 2009 AFCA officers include first vice-president Larry Kehres, Mount Union College; second vice-president Rob Ash, Montana State, and third vice-president Mike Bellotti, Oregon. In addition, Vanderbilt’s Bobby Johnson and Buffalo’s Turner Gill were elected to the board of directors.
