The RecordFormer Kent State President Carol A. Cartwright was named as president at Bowling Green State. Cartwright, who had been fulfilling the position on an interim basis since last July, becomes the university’s 10th president and the first woman to lead the institution. Prior to her tenure as president at Kent State from 1991-06 she was vice chancellor for academic affairs at UC Davis and dean for undergraduate programs and vice provost at Penn State. Cartwright is currently a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, formerly chaired the board of directors of the American Association for Higher Education and served on the boards of directors of the American Council on Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, and the American Association of Colleges and Universities board.
Other transactions
Men’s cross country – IUPUI hired Chuck Koeppen as head men’s cross country coach. For the past 37 years, Koeppen has been Carmel (Indiana) High School, where he is credited with 11 boys’, 11 girls’ and one boys’ track and field state championships. Koeppen, who succeeds Scott Williams as the third head coach in the program’s 12-year history, was named as national cross country coach of the year in 1982 and national track coach in 2000.
Football – Tom Shea resigned after two seasons as head coach at Dakota State to take charge of the program at Upper Iowa … Southern Miss extended the contract for head coach Larry Fedora.
Women’s volleyball – East Carolina’s Chris Rushing resigned as head coach, effective June 30. Rushing took over the program in 2005 after seven years as head coach at Tennessee-Martin.
Women’s soccer – Steven Voltz stepped down after one season as head coach at Huntingdon.
Men’s basketball – Max Good was named as head coach at Loyola Marymount, replacing Bill Bayno, who resigned after serving a leave of absence since November 24. Good, who has been the acting head coach during Bayno’s leave, enters his 15th season as a head coach at the NCAA level, including stints at Bryant, UNLV and Eastern Kentucky.
