Virginia Tech hired Jennifer McGranahan to be the Hokies’ assistant cross country and distance coach. McGranahan was a personal trainer in Pensacola, Florida, and was a graduate assistant at West Florida. She also has prep coaching experience and was a student-athlete at Florida.

Men’s basketball assistants – Southern Illinois tabbed Koby Altman. Altman, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Amherst, will be a graduate assistant for head coach Chris Lowery. He was a student-athlete at Middlebury.

Women’s basketball assistants – Texas-San Antonio added KC Cowgill as director of women’s basketball operations. She was an assistant at Western Illinois and Centenary (Louisiana) and played basketball at Missouri State and Nebraska.

Deaths – Leon Roach, a 19-year-old track and field student-athlete at UC San Diego, died September 5 as the result of a training accident. Roach, a pole vaulter, fell and hit his head on a cement floor September 3 during a practice drill on a rope swing.
