Wisconsin-La Crosse to eliminate baseball, men’s tennisWisconsin-La Crosse President Joe Gow announced plans to eliminate baseball and men’s tennis to help the school save $400,000. Before formally ending the programs, Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rules dictate that the school must discuss plans with league chancellors and Commissioner Gary Karner.
Additional reductions throughout the university are expected.
“Approving the discontinuation of the UW-L baseball and men's tennis programs is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make. I know that both programs have long and rich traditions at our university, and many members of the UW-L community will be very disappointed by these actions,” Gow said in a statement. “But our current financial constraints force us to confront the reality that in the future we will not be able to sustain our current range of sports programs.”
Grow estimated that eliminating the two programs will save about $60,000 annually and also help preserve resources for the remaining athletics programs.
