Two champions lead DIII track and field honoreesTwo field-event national champions are among the four individuals honored this year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as Division III men’s scholar-athletes of the year.
Indoor weight throw champion Sam Johnson of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and outdoor javelin champion Brock Solveson of Concordia (Wisconsin) were named, along with indoor track honoree Dallas Vincent of Wisconsin-La Crosse and outdoor track honoree Brian Harvey of Carnegie Mellon.
Solveson, who also finished 10th in the decathlon at the Division III outdoor championships, is a business major at Concordia, and Johnson is a physics major at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Vincent, an accounting major at Wisconsin-La Crosse, was indoor runner-up in the 5,000-meter run and also anchored his school’s distance medley relay to a runner-up finish at the indoor championships. Harvey, a recent recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, finished second in the outdoor 5,000-meter run.
The four lead a group of 186 student-athletes representing 78 Division III member institutions who were selected for the Division III All Academic Track and Field Team.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Tufts each placed eight student-athletes on the team, followed by Wisconsin-La Crosse with seven. Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members placed 23 student-athletes on the team, followed by the University Athletic Association with 21 and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association with 18.
A student-athlete must compile a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 and meet the Division III indoor or outdoor championships’ automatic and provisional qualifying standard in an event to qualify for the team.
