New ECAC festival produces four champsThe Eastern College Athletic Conference’s inaugural Holiday Festival crowned four champions over the weekend during play in the Milk House Arena at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.
Johns Hopkins won a four-team men’s tournament bracket during the competition and the Montclair State men, Worcester Polytechnic women and Gwynedd-Mercy women won round-robin competition involving a total of nine teams during play Friday through Sunday.
Johns Hopkins improved its record to 6-3 by beating Roger Williams in its opening contest in Men’s Bracket A, then cruising to a 75-45 win over Penn State Altoona in the final.
Montclair State opened with a win over Potsdam State in Men’s Bracket B, then survived an overtime period against St. Joseph’s (Long Island), 70-64, to clinch the crown and emerge with a 9-3 season record.
In Women’s Bracket C, Worcester Polytechnic rolled to an opening victory over Sage, then beat Neumann, 69-57, to claim its title and improve its record to 8-4.
Gwynedd-Mercy beat Johns Hopkins in the Women’s Bracket D opener, then cruised to a 90-59 win over Goucher to finish Holiday Festival play with a 7-3 record.
The ECAC is seeking conference members to participate in the second Holiday Festival, scheduled for December 20-24. Further information can be obtained from Steve Banford, ECAC administrator for officiating and special projects.
