Management Council member Sitterly plans to retireJoan Sitterly, a member of the Division III Management Council, announced plans Wednesday to retire as director of athletics at Cortland State in late February.
Sitterly was one of only two women’s volleyball coaches to win 800 games in Division III when she left coaching at Cortland State in 2004 to become the school’s full-time AD. She currently ranks third all-time in the division in victories with 816.
She was elected to the Management Council in 2008 and has been a member of other NCAA committees, including the Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee and Division III Championships Committee.
Sitterly joined the Cortland State physical education faculty in 1983. As volleyball coach, she led the Red Dragons to 18 Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship appearances and 11 State University of New York Athletic Conference championships, earning SUNYAC coach-of-the-year honors seven times.
Mike Urtz, associate director of athletics at Cortland State, will begin service as interim AD January 1 as the school searches for a successor. Sitterly’s retirement is effective February 23.
