James, Paranya earn 25th anniversary honorsSeven-time indoor track champion Amber James of Wheaton (Massachusetts), the only woman to win the 400-meter run four times, and five-time champion Karl Paranya of Haverford, a record-holder in the 1,500-meter run, are the Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee’s choices as the top male and female student-athletes in the 25-year history of the division’s indoor track and field championships.
James competed from 2000 to 2004 and, in addition to becoming the only man or woman to win a Division III track event four straight years with her 400-meter wins, also led Wheaton’s 1,600-meter relay team to three wins as the Lyons won the Division III team championship three times during her time at the school.
She also led Wheaton to three Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships titles and claimed four outdoor 400-meter run titles, finishing her career with a combined 17 event championships in indoor and outdoor competition, including three 200-meter dash outdoor crowns.
Paranya competed from 1993 to 1997, winning the indoor 1,500-meter run three times and adding two 800-meter run titles. His 3:47.72 time in the 1,500 in 1997 stands as the event record.
He also was a four-time outdoor champion, winning the 800 and 1,500-meter events twice each. In 1997, he also became the first Division III track student-athlete to run the outdoor mile in less than four minutes.
