Dustin Phillips of Texas-Tyler and Karina Pikhart of MIT have been selected as this year’s Division III recipients of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.

It was the second time for Phillips to capture the award. He previously was honored in 2007 as the national honoree representing junior colleges. He is a journalism major who represented Texas-Tyler in both singles and doubles competition at the 2008 and 2009 Division III championships.

Pikhart, the recipient for women, is a senior mechanical engineering major. She led a student team this year that developed a six-dot Braille labeler, a device that can be used by the blind or visually impaired to attach labels to household items for quick identification.

The Arthur Ashe Award is awarded to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
