Hanover sophomore Daniel Passafiume’s 25 catches Saturday against Indiana cross-state rival Franklin set an NCAA all-divisions single-game football record for receptions.

The wide receiver topped the record of 24 catches set in 1983 by Mississippi Valley State’s Jerry Rice and tied in 2002 by Brown’s Chas Gessner.

Passafiume’s 25th catch came during the final minute of Hanover’s 42-28 loss to Franklin in the teams’ annual Victory Bell game.

"After the game, coach came up to me and said that it might have been an NCAA record,” Passafiume told The Madison (Indiana) Courier. “I said, 'No way,’ ”

Passafiume scored twice and rolled up 153 receiving yards.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Rice set the old record during a game against Southern, and Gessner matched it in a game against Rhode Island.

Passafiume finished the season with 114 receptions for 1,054 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“He fought through a lot of injuries this year,” Hanover coach Joe Austin told the Courier. “Basically from the Waynesburg game (September 12) on, he was pretty banged up. So for Daniel to do the things and be one of the leading receivers in the nation for the next two years, which he’s capable of doing, we’ll need for him to be healthy and continue to get stronger.”
