Elms, Newbury plan Hildebrandt tributeTwo schools will pay tribute Saturday night to a young coach who made an impact on both institutions before his death last summer.
The Elms men’s volleyball team, hosting Newbury in a match this weekend, will join the school’s women’s volleyball squad in presenting special commemorative medallions honoring the late David Hildebrandt to Newbury men and women volleyball student-athletes.
Hildebrandt coached the men’s and women’s programs for seven years at Newbury before accepting an offer last May to lead the volleyball programs at Elms. However, he drowned during a vacation outing before last fall’s women’s volleyball season began.
The event also will close Elms’ first “Pink Out” day, following a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader against Daniel Webster where fans are being asked to wear pink as part of a NECC student-athlete advisory committee effort to raise funds for breast cancer research.
Immediately after the volleyball match, friends of Hildebrandt will present a slide show celebrating the coach’s life during a reception, where attendees will be encouraged to share memories.
The 29-year-old Hildebrandt drowned in New Hampshire’s Swift River in early August during a camping trip with friends.
In addition to coaching, Hildebrandt also had worked as a residence hall staff member and in the enrollment office at Newbury, which remembered him in a memorial service late last summer.
