Division III Convention notesDelegates attending Friday morning’s annual Division III issues forum briskly moved through a preview of proposals that will be voted on during this morning’s business session and received a report on the Division III Drug Education and Testing Pilot, raising few questions … The forum also included a brief report on a simulation model created to help schools considering Division II membership to evaluate the impact of awarding financial aid. The simulation model is seen as useful in addressing Division III’s recent growth, by permitting an evaluation of a partial-scholarship model by prospective members as well as active members that might see benefits in providing some athletics-based financial aid. “If the decision is to join Division III, that decision should be based on a commitment to the Division III philosophy and not on an assumption that Division III membership is automatically the most cost-effective option available,” Presidents Council John Fry explained … Former Division III Management Council chair Mike Miranda is stepping in as parliamentarian at today’s business session, substituting for Georgana Taggert of Mount St. Joseph, who has served in that role since 2000 but is unable to attend this year’s Convention due to illness … St. Mary’s (Minnesota), York (Pennsylvania) and Stevens Institute will be honored during the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators reception this afternoon as recipients of this year’s NADIIIAA/Jostens Community Service Awards, honoring projects involving student-athletes during the 2007-08 academic year.
