Buffalo crash victims remembered in funeralsThe last of three funerals was held this week for former Division III student-athletes who were killed last month in a plane crash near Buffalo.
Madeline “Maddy” Loftus, a St. Mary’s (Minnesota) graduate who completed her ice hockey eligibility there after playing for two years at Buffalo State, was buried Tuesday following a memorial service in Parsippany, New Jersey.
Services also were held late last week for Lorin Maurer, a Princeton athletics fund-raiser who was a swimmer at Rowan, and Beth Kushner, a tennis student-athlete during 2007-08 at Keuka.
The three were among 50 victims of the crash February 12 of a Continental Connection flight in Clarence Center, New York.
Maurer, 30, a former NCAA national office intern, was buried last Thursday in Laureldale, Pennsylvania, following a February 21 memorial service in West Lawn, Pennsylvania. A classmate and swimming teammate from Wilson High School in West Lawn, 2000 Olympic silver medalist Kristy Kowal, was among those who paid tribute to Maurer during the memorial service.
Maurer also was remembered by coworkers and friends during a memorial service Friday at Princeton.
A memorial service also was held Friday for Kushner, 19, in West Seneca, New York.
The 24-year-old Loftus was remembered by the Rev. Joseph Buffardi during yesterday’s service for her smiling face and love of her sport.
“You may be asking yourself, ‘What is Maddy doing at this moment?’ I thought that probably, about this time, she has convinced Jesus to put on a pair of ice skates, and she is probably right now teaching Jesus how to play hockey,” he said.
More than 700 family members, friends and former teammates from both St. Mary’s and Buffalo State attended the service, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. About a dozen Continental pilots also attended the service. Loftus’ father is a former pilot for the airline.
