Sonoma State caught Cal State San Bernardino on the 72nd hole of the 2009 Division II Men’s Golf Championships on Friday and then beat the Coyotes in a one-hole playoff to capture its first national golf crown.

The tournament was played May 19-22 at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Washington.

It appeared Cal State San Bernardino was poised to win its first golf title in the program’s 25-year history, but the Coyotes watched an eight-stroke lead slip to one stroke at the 18th hole. Then Sonoma State’s Patrick Bauer pulled his team into a tie despite a bogey at 18 because the Coyotes’ Gene Webster double-bogeyed the last.

The Seawolves then claimed their first national championship by getting four pars and a bogey in the sudden-death playoff on the 18th hole. Cal State San Bernardino had three pars and two bogeys. It was the second straight year the team championship needed a playoff since West Florida won a three-way tiebreaker in 2008, the first time the tournament had to be decided in extra holes.

“I tried to keep it really simple and told them no matter the outcome, I just wanted them to do their best,” said Sonoma State coach Val Verhunce. “That was all I could ask.”

The team outcome was a win-win for the California Collegiate Athletic Association, which had its two top golf squads finish 1-2. It was the first Division II golf championship for a CCAA team since Cal State Northridge in 1974 and the first by a California school since UC Davis in 1979.

The Coyotes’ second-place finish was the program’s best effort in 13 trips to the national championship.

Both the team and individual titles were decided by playoffs, with Gavin Smith of Indiana (Pennsylvania) winning medalist honors over Kelbi Lee of Ferris State.

Smith, who had finished his round more than four hours before the playoff, drained a birdie putt from 18 feet just after Lee lipped out a putt from a nearly equal distance.

Smith, a junior from Stirling, Scotland, had no idea he’d still be in contention when he finished with a final-round 74 to put him at 5-over 289 for the tournament.

“I never thought I’d be in a playoff,” he said. “We were hanging around because there’s an award presentation for the top 10. Then it looked like there might be a playoff, maybe with five people, then four, three, and finally just two. (At the start of the week,) I thought maybe top 20. To win it ... I have no words.”
