The Drury Panthers prowled their way to a fifth consecutive team title in the Division II Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday night at the Houston Recreation and Wellness Center, rallying past Wayne State in the meet’s final day to post a 543-504.5 victory.
The Panthers’ winning margin in the fastest meet in Division II history made for the closest team competition since 2002 when Cal State Bakersfield edged North Dakota by a 529-507 count, and it kept alive a string in which no team other than Drury, Cal State Bakersfield or Oakland – the latter two which have since reclassified to Division I – has won the men’s team title since 1985. Drury has now won the last five, and seven of the last 11.
The outcome was in doubt heading into the meet’s final day when Wayne State brought with it a 36.5-point lead. But Drury closed to within 7.5 points in the leadoff event of Saturday’s finals when Mitch Snyder set his second record of the meet, smashing a seven-year-old mark in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:00.51, more than seven seconds better than North Dakota’s Rodrigo Cintra swam in 2002. Kyrillo Fesenko chipped in a fourth-place finish as well to counter Wayne State’s Fernando Costa’s third-place finish in the event.
The Panthers took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the second final of the evening, scoring 35 points to Wayne State’s nine in the 100-yard freestyle. Wayne State closed to within 2.5 points with Sean Smith’s record-breaking performance in the 200-yard backstroke, but Drury outpointed the Warriors, 39-13, in the 200-yard breaststroke to pad its margin heading into the meet-finale 400-yard freestyle relay. Drury won that event, too, breaking the meet record the Panthers set in the event last year.
Drury got key contributions during the meet not only from Snyder but also from Fesenko, who won the 400-yard individual medley and placed third and fourth in the 1,000 and 500 freestyles, respectively. Sergiy Bilov won the 200-yard freestyle, and Jun Han Kim also scored big for the Panthers, placing second in the 400-yard individual medley and third in the 200 IM. Drury in fact scored 79 points in those two events.
The Panthers won the meet despite an uneven performance in the five relays. In Wednesday’s 200-yard medley relay, the Panthers were disqualified in the finals and allowed Wayne State to gain 34 second-place points. The Panthers were disqualified again in the preliminaries of Thursday’s 200-yard freestyle and watched idly as Wayne State gained 30 points by finishing fourth. Then in Thursday’s 400-yard medley relay, the Panthers didn’t qualify for the finals but set a meet record in winning the consolation heat (a record that was subsequently broken in the finals by Ouachita Baptist).
Things got better for the Panthers on Friday when they set a meet record in the 800-yard freestyle relay and another in the 400 free on Saturday.
“The comeback was really special,” said Panthers coach Brian Reynolds, who cited a Saturday morning team meeting in which he emphasized doing well in the preliminaries. “It shows the fortitude our kids have and exemplifies what our kids are made of.”
Reynolds was especially proud of freshman Jesse Lawrence, who had “a lifetime swim” in the 200-yard breaststroke, beating his all-time best by nine seconds to finish as runner-up.
Wayne State brought plenty of firepower for its attempt at a first team title. The Warriors’ relay dance card featured a win in the 400 medley, a runner-up in the 200 medley, a third place in the 800 free and a fourth in the 200 free.
But the Warriors also were strong elsewhere. Senior Duarte Maurao was a monster, winning the 100- and 200-yard butterflys and scoring 31 points in the individual medleys with a third-place finish in the 400 and a fourth in the 200. He also swam the third leg in the Warriors’ winning 400-yard medley relay and the second-place 200 version, then anchored the team’s third-place 800-yard freestyle relay.
Mourao’s classmate Costa finished second, third and fourth in the 500-, 1,650- and 1,000-yard freestyles, respectively, and preceded Mourao’s anchor in the 800 free relay. Gus Chagas placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, among other contributions, and senior Sean Smith set a meet mark in the 200-yard backstroke.
In addition to the team race, the story of the meet was the speed in which it was swum. In all, meet records were set in 12 of the 19 swimming events, two by Tampa’s Aleksander Hetland, who breezed to record wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. In the former, Hetland topped Mourao’s mark in the preliminaries, and in the latter he topped his own preliminaries time.
Incarnate Word’s Alex Yatsko had a big meet as well, winning the 500 free and placing third, fifth and fifth in the 200 and 1,000 and 1,650, respectively. And Dan Perdew of UC San Diego beat a six-year-old record in the 100-yard freestyle when he touched the wall in 43.30.
Missouri S&T, Ouachita Baptist and Limestone also did well. The Miners of Missouri S&T scored significant relay points in the 200 medley (fourth), the 200 free (fifth), the 400 medley (sixth), the 800 free (seventh) and the 400 free (seventh). Meanwhile, sophomore Zlatan Hamzic won the 200-yard breaststroke by almost three seconds over Drury’s Lawrence.
Ouachita Baptist also dazzled in the relays, winning the 200 medley and finishing second in the 400 medley.
Limestone won the 200 free relay in record time. Sophomore Goran Majlat also won the 50-yard freestyle.
In diving, Clarion sophomore Logan Pearsall captured the three-meter title, while St. Cloud State’s Nathan Jimerson successfully defended his one-meter crown.
