Newman coach makes fast-break rescueNewman women’s basketball coach Tracy Anderson had to coach more than just hoops during a recent trip to San Antonio to play Incarnate Word.
After leading her team in a practice last Thursday afternoon, Anderson and her student-athletes witnessed a serious single-car accident on a busy exit ramp in San Antonio.
Anderson found the injured driver unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. The door was locked and the window was up, so Anderson and a few of the players who disregarded her orders to stay in the van joined another passerby in breaking the window and freeing the injured man.
Anderson, who is CPR-trained, found a pulse on the driver and took off his seat belt as he started to regain consciousness. He began to thrash around, however, and Anderson helped hold him in place until the paramedics arrived.
“I never really get nervous before games, but this was something entirely different,” Anderson told the Wichita Eagle. “It was probably the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me.”
The Wichita paper reported that the San Antonio Police Department confirmed the accident took place but would not provide the name of the driver involved and did not have any details on his condition.
