Lynn wins first DII baseball titleLynn starter Dan Wright and reliever Tommy Kahnle limited Emporia State to six hits in a 2-1 title-game victory in the Division II Baseball Championship Saturday in Cary, North Carolina.
Wright allowed only one run in the first inning before departing after the seventh. Kahnle threw two perfect innings to record the save for the Fighting Knights, who won the program’s first baseball crown.
Kahnle, the tourney’s most outstanding player, was 1-0 with two saves in the finals. He retired 21 of the 22 batters he faced, including the last 13.
Emporia State’s duo of Ben Graham and Dominic King also was impressive. Graham struck out 10 in his eight innings of work.
“With those two pitchers going, it was going to be a low-scoring game,” said Lynn coach Rudy Garbalosa, whose team finished the season 46-16. “Danny Wright pitched extremely well, and I believe Graham did an extremely good job pitching. Graham pitched out of some big innings, and he really had us baffled with that slider.”
Wright, who earned his NCAA Division II-leading 15th win in the finale, struggled with his control early. After allowing a lead-off single to Emporia State’s Conner Crumbliss, Wright walked the bases loaded with one out.
A line drive by Emporia State’s Kellen Lane hit Wright in the shoulder, but the Knights’ starter was able to retrieve the ball and throw Lane out at first. A run scored on the play, but Wright struck out Mike Sharp to end the threat.
“Wright did a great job,” Garbalosa said. “He was a little rough out there in the first inning, but he settled down and put us in position.”
Lynn tied the game in the top of the second when Paddy Matera led off with a double and moved up a base on a single by catcher Kyle Holloway. Chad Crowe delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the score.
The Knights took the lead in the bottom on the third inning when Daniel Flores delivered a one-out single. He stole second, and Chris Chavez drove him home with a two-out single.
The Hornets, 49-14, held Lynn off the scoreboard from that point, which was a common occurrence in the tournament. Emporia State led the tournament with a 1.50 earned-run average and held the opposition to .232 batting average.
However, Lynn did manage to collect 10 hits in the championship game.
Matera, the Knights’ second baseman, had the honor of recording the final out to clinch the title when he secured a pop up.
“I lost it for a second when I looked at the sun,” Matera said. “It was either going to hit me in the face or I was going to catch it. So I got out there, and it was kind of like sandlot – I just put my glove up and made the catch.”
Like most things during this 8-0 run in the postseason, Lynn made all the plays.
