Lock Haven’s eight-woman senior class, led by pitcher Kristin Erb, added a second Division II Softball Championship title during their time in the Lady Eagles’ softball program.

Erb tossed a one-hitter and drove in three runs as Lock Haven downed Alabama-Huntsville, 8-0, in five innings in Salem, Virginia, Monday.

Lock Haven also captured the 2006 title when Erb and her classmates were freshmen.

“I’m glad to see the seniors go out on this note,” said Lady Eagles coach Kelley Green, whose team finished the year 51-6.

Erb, named the tournament’s most outstanding player, was the winning pitcher in all but one of Lock Haven’s games this season. Her 50 wins tied the Division II single-season record, joining Danielle Penner, who won 50 for California (Pennsylvania) in 1997.

Erb’s gem in the final was her 33rd shutout in 2009 and the 100th of her career. She posted a 168-18 (.903) career record.

Lock Haven broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the fourth. Erb had a two-run double and Ilia Lopez added a sacrifice fly.

The Lady Eagles put Alabama-Huntsville (54-6) in a deeper hole by adding five runs in the fifth. Lopez had the two-run double and Erb contributed a RBI single in that rally.

The Chargers, who defeated Lock Haven, 3-1, earlier in the tournament, saw eight of their first 11 batters strike out. They were unable to score in the bottom of the fifth, which brought an end to the game since Lock Haven had an eight-run lead after five innings.

Emily Roach’s single in the second inning was the only hit Alabama-Huntsville could manage against Erb, whose nine strikeouts ran her season total to 399.

Lock Haven had to fight through the loser’s bracket and then defeat top-ranked North Georgia twice to advance to the final. The Lady Eagles posted 8-0 and 8-1 wins over North Georgia, which only lost five games all season.

Their offensive outbursts were common throughout the finals as Lock Haven tied an NCAA Division II series record with 32 runs. UC Davis also scored 32 runs in 2003.

Lock Haven’s Sarah Norris also set an individual record when she led off with a single in the first inning. The hit was her 12th of the series, which set a Division II record. The previous record was held by Colleen Thorburn, who had 11 hits for Kennesaw State in the 1995 tournament.
