GLVC imposes postseason ban on Southern IndianaThe Great Lakes Valley Conference has imposed a postseason ban on the Southern Indiana men’s basketball program for the 2009-10 season. The ban includes both GLVC and NCAA postseason tournaments.
The ban imposed by the league’s Council of Presidents comes after Southern Indiana self-reported violations in its men’s basketball program this past May. According to the Evansville Courier, the violations include academic indiscretions and providing and paying for transportation for student-athletes under the former coach, who has since resigned.
Southern Indiana self-imposed penalties that include vacating all wins from the 2008-09 season and returning NCAA funds received from the institution’s participation in a 2009 Division II regional. The GLVC council acknowledged the steps the school had taken but nonetheless regarded the one-year postseason ban as appropriate. The NCAA investigation into the case is ongoing.
Head coach Rodney Watson told the Courier that he was disheartened by the announcement, but knew that such a sanction was at least possible when he took the job in May.
Southern Indiana went 27-7 last year and reached the Division II tournament for the sixth time in eight years.
