Florida Southern won the overall team title at the second annual Sunshine State Collegiate Championships contested in Clearwater, Florida, March 28.

The Lady Mocs accumulated the most points in pool play and playoffs to earn the crown. In all, 41 teams representing the nine Sunshine State Conference institutions competed in the all-day event promoted and supported by coaches of the participating schools.

In addition to winning the overall team championship, the Moccasins took first place in the Gold Division with the team of Danielle Durham and Danielle Higginbotham and in the Silver Division with the team of Ashley Martin and Natalie Arvizu.

Sand volleyball is not yet an official, sanctioned NCAA sport. Division II approved sand volleyball as an emerging sport for women at the NCAA Convention in January, while Division III declined to forward legislation until more information about playing and practice seasons and playing rules could be obtained. The issue remains pending in Division I until the Board of Directors meets later this month.
