Armstrong Atlantic captured its second straight NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championship with a 5-4 victory over Barry on Saturday in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The Pirates, who concluded the season with a 30-1 mark, became the first team to win back-to-back titles since West Florida in 2004-05.

The title was decided on a back-and-forth match at No. 5 singles between sophomore Rafael Array of Armstrong Atlantic and Roman Werschel of Barry. In the only three-set match of the national title contest, Array took the first set, 6-4, while Werschel earned the second set, 7-5. Array came back to claim the third set, 6-3, and give the Pirates the championship.

Thanks to a strong showing in doubles, Barry held an early lead in the title match. Although Armstrong Atlantic took the win at No. 3 doubles, Barry responded with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The Bucs’ No. 1 doubles tandem, Emmanuel Fraitzl and Max Wimmer, edged Paul Bishop and Mikk Irdoja, 8-6, and Ales Svigelj and Andrew Sharnov registered a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles against the Pirates’ Array and Tim Johannsen, giving the Bucs a 2-1 advantage entering the singles portion of the contest.

Irdoja tallied a singles point for Armstrong Atlantic with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sharnov at No. 3, but Barry once again responded. The Bucs’ Wimmer earned the victory at the No. 4 singles position, handing Armstrong Atlantic’s Paul Fitzgerald his first dual match singles loss on the year.

Johannsen defeated Jakub Fefjar at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-0, to even the championship match at 3-3. Barry surged into the lead after Fraitzl’s straight sets win over Bishop at No. 2 singles and needed just one more point to claim the title, but Svigelj fell to Armstrong Atlantic’s Eudaldo Bonet, 7-6, 6-0, in No. 1 singles, to knot the score at 4-4 and set up Array’s dramatic singles victory for the title.

Barry finished the season 27-3.
