WCC puts heart and sole into outreachThe West Coast Conference has donated more than 5,200 pairs of new and gently used shoes to the nonprofit Soles4Soles organization.
The WCC teamed with Zappos.com to make the gift in conjunction with the conference basketball championships.
Each WCC member school collected shoes from December to the end of the conference season. Loyola Marymount students donated 1,500 pairs, followed by Gonzaga and Pepperdine. Loyola Marymount’s student fan group will receive a free party before the first round of the men’s basketball conference tournament.
The shoes will be distributed internationally by Soles4Soles. Some footwear will be given to at-risk youth in Nevada, where the conference tournament is located.
“I would like to congratulate our eight institutions, their student-athletes and campus communities for this remarkable accomplishment,” said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. “To see the conference work together and exceed our aggressive goal in this shoe drive is a true testament to the WCC’s mission-driven commitment to giving back to the Las Vegas community.”
