Stony Brook lands 2011 women's lacrosse finalsThe NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee has selected Stony Brook to host the Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on May 27 and 29, 2011.
Stony Brook will host the women’s lacrosse championship for the first time, becoming just the second host from New York since the inception of the championship in 1982. Syracuse hosted the championship in 2003.
“The committee was impressed with Stony Brook’s bid and recent NCAA championship events they have hosted,” said Ryan Bamford, chair of the women’s lacrosse committee and senior associate director of athletics at Yale. “Those factors, combined with the growth of lacrosse on Long Island, will no doubt make this an outstanding championship weekend.”
Stony Brook AD Jim Fiore said hosting gives his school the chance to partner with the NCAA “to showcase the great sport of women’s lacrosse not only to the fans of Suffolk County but also to all the fans who will join us on Long Island for this championship event.
Stony Brook was recently awarded a 2010 men’s lacrosse quarterfinal as well.
Towson has served as the host site for the women’s championship for two consecutive years (2008 and 2009) and will host the championship for a third straight year at Johnny Unitas Stadium on May 28 and 30, 2010.
