The Outback Bowl recently announced that it has extended its contract with the Big Ten Conference through the 2013 football season.

The bowl will continue to invite the third pick of teams from the conference to play in the New Year’s Day game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Since 1996, the Big Ten has faced the Southeastern Conference in the Outback Bowl. The bowl also takes the third pick from the SEC. Before the 1996 game, the Big Ten faced teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Big Ten’s association with the Outback Bowl began in 1993.

“With the number of Big Ten alumni in Florida, this game is a natural fit and should continue to provide compelling matchups on the field,” said Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany.

“We love the teams, bands, fans, and the tradition and history of the conference,” said Outback Bowl President/CEO Jim McVay. “We appreciate our wonderful relationship with Commissioner Delany, the school presidents and Big Ten athletics directors. They are great partners.”
