Michigan State dedicates baseball stadiumMichigan State dedicated McLane Baseball Stadium on May 2 and capped the day with a 9-1 victory over visiting Penn State.
The $4 million facility enhances Old College Field, which was designated an official state historic site.
Several Spartans baseball alumni from every decade since the 1930s, including Major League Baseball Hall of Fame member Robin Roberts, were recognized before the game, as were Drayton and Elizabeth McLane, who donated the funding for the new facility. Drayton McLane attended graduate school at Michigan State in the 1950s, and he and his wife now own the Houston Astros.
“It’s our goal as an athletic department to compete for championships,” said Athletics Director Mark Hollis. “More importantly, it’s about sending our athletes into the community as quality individuals based upon their academics, based upon their athletics and based upon their character. Having known Drayton McLane for some time now, I can assure you that he is the model of character that we put forward for our student-athletes. … We’re very proud to have him here today.”
“All of us are a product of our past. I certainly am a product of the education, maturing process and the high standards of Michigan State,” McLane said. “It played an important part in my life as an individual and as a businessman.”
The pregame ceremony also included the unveiling of a historic marker for College Field that will stand at the entrance to the stadium.
