Hatchell wins 800th gameNorth Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell coached her 800th career victory January 11 when the Tar Heels beat North Carolina State, 75-66, in overtime.
“I was about to think it wasn’t going to happen there for awhile,” Hatchell said after the game.
Hatchell joined the ranks of fellow women’s basketball coaches Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and C. Vivian Stringer, all of whom have won 800 or more games in their careers. In 23 seasons at North Carolina, Hatchell has earned 528 victories, including the 1994 NCAA championship.
Hatchell also coached at Francis Marion and played basketball and volleyball at Carson-Newman.
