Goodwill trumps rivalry for Tennessee-Martin, Murray StateThe Tennessee-Martin and Murray State women’s basketball teams were supposed to face each other on the court Saturday, but after an ice storm postponed the contest and knocked out power and running water at the Murray, Kentucky campus, the Skyhawks opened their doors to their archrivals.
Because the campus – including dormitories – closed, the Lady Racers stayed at Tennessee-Martin until the residence halls reopened February 1. The teams practiced at Tennessee-Martin’s Elam Center.
“At times like this, basketball is about a lot more than rivalries,” said Skyhawks head coach Tara Tansil-Gentry. “The Murray State campus is going through a lot right now, and this is just a small way we can try to help out their situation. I’m sure if the roles were reversed they would do the same thing.”
When a February 2008 tornado destroyed the campus of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, Tennessee-Martin athletics and housing departments hosted the school’s softball team until the campus reopened.
