Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of December 14-18.

• Several more institutions hired minority head football coaches, including Kansas with Turner Gill and Richmond with Latrell Scott. There are now 20 ethnic minority head football coaches at non-historically black colleges and universities in Division I.
• The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee opposes the deregulation of telephone calls to recruits. It also opposes a series of proposals that would modify the nonchampionship competition segment of several sports. SAAC chair Matt Baysinger explains the group’s position on several key proposals in the 2009-10 legislative cycle.
• USOC Executive Director Stephanie Streeter explains why her organization feels sand volleyball belongs in intercollegiate athletics. Division I will vote on the issue during an override at the 2010 NCAA Convention.
• Dan Guerrero, athletics director at UCLA and chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, addresses talk of expanding the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
