Division I rewind
The NCAA News
Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of November 16-20.
- The Graduation Success Rate for all student-athletes in Division I rose one point to 79 percent, the latest data show. Men’s basketball student-athletes saw the most dramatic improvement, graduating at a rate 10 percent higher over the last seven years. The Graduation Success Rate is an NCAA-designed metric that is generally considered more accurate than the federal graduation rate, which does not account for transfers.
- The Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet will conduct an extensive and thorough review of recruiting rules in all sports, expected to produce several legislative proposals that could change the way student-athletes are recruited. Cabinet chair Petrina Long, senior associate athletics director at UCLA, said the group will address an area of NCAA policy that has frustrated the membership for some time.
- Former NCAA men’s basketball director Bill Hancock will be the first executive director of the Bowl Championship Series. Hancock has worked as an administrator and spokesman for the BCS since 2005 and will replace the BCS coordinator position.
- Virginia women’s basketball coach Debbie Ryan won her 700th game, a 68-57 victory over UMBC in Baltimore. Ryan is the 12th coach to reach the milestone and joins six other active coaches with 700 wins.
