Division I rewind
The NCAA News
Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of October 26-30.
- The Division I Board of Directors approved a package of reforms targeting the men’s basketball recruiting environment. The Board changed the definition of a recruited prospective student-athlete and adopted interpretations meant to curb the funneling of money to people associated with prospects. Coaches caught in violation of the interpretations will face suspension. The Division I governance structure will have the opportunity to review a series of proposals on the topic in the 2009-10 legislative cycle.
- The Board also accepted the recommendations of the Basketball Academic Enhancement Working Group and sponsored three of them as legislative proposals in the current cycle: an adjustment to the playing and practice season, a change in counter status for student-athletes who choose not to transfer after a coaching change and a maximum number of physical education credit hours to fulfill two-year college transfer requirements. Two other recommendations, mandatory summer school for incoming men’s basketball student-athletes and the payment of travel expenses for parents on official visits, will receive further study.
- The Board elected Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman to be the next chair. Perlman will begin his term at the end of the Board’s April 2010 meeting. Perlman will serve on the search committee for a new NCAA president. He replaces Clemson’s Jim Barker, whose term concludes in April.
- The Division I Amateurism Cabinet will begin drafting legislative proposals for the 2010-11 cycle that delineate what institutions can and can’t do with student-athlete names and likenesses in commercial activity.
- The Committee on Academic Performance launched a review of the Academic Performance Program, including a critical look at the 900 and 925 benchmarks for Academic Progress Rate penalties.
- The Division I Women’s Basketball Committee selected sites for the 2011 first and second rounds and regional contests.
