Division I rewind
The NCAA News
The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of July 27-31.
- The Legislative Council continued to support legislation adding a week to the beginning of the baseball season and adding sand volleyball to the list of emerging sports for women. If the Board of Directors takes no action at its August 6 meeting, the proposals will go to the 2010 NCAA Convention in Atlanta for a vote by the full Division I membership.
- The Basketball Academic Enhancement Group reiterated its support for a mandatory summer-school plan for incoming freshmen that makes institutions responsible for assessing those players’ academic preparedness and for properly acclimating them into the campus educational climate.
- Several groups in the Division I structure began work on legislation creating the structure for sand volleyball. The sport was added to the list of emerging sports for women earlier this year.
- The Ohio Valley Conference named current Director of Division I Beth DeBauche as the league’s next commissioner. DeBauche replaces John Steinbrecher. She will begin her duties in September.
