The NCAA News
Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of July 6-10.
- The Division I Academic Cabinet began studying initial-eligibility standards, developing guiding principles for any future change to the academic criteria for prospective student-athletes. The Cabinet will also sponsor legislation regulating the use of nontraditional coursework to meet initial-eligibility standards.
- The ACC changed the site of its baseball tournament from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Greensboro and Durham, North Carolina, for 2011-13.
- The Amateurism Cabinet started reviewing the final report of the Presidential Task Force on Commercialism in Intercollegiate Athletics, agreeing that the group’s work will focus on standards for the use of the image or likeness of student-athletes and the creation of a committee to oversee the membership’s activities in the area of commercialism.
- The Championships/Sport Management Cabinet delayed discussion of the implementation of sand volleyball as an emerging sport until the results of the override request are known.
