Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of June 1-5.

  • Washington swept Florida to win the 2009 Women’s College World Series. The Huskies were led by strong performances from pitcher Danielle Lawrie, named most outstanding player of the tournament. National championships were also decided in rowing and men’s golf.
  • Athletics departments are turning to Twitter to communicate, using the technology to reach fans of their coaches and athletics programs. The NCAA has also outlined some rules for coaches using the social networking tool to communicate with prospective student-athletes.
  • Men’s Golf Committee Chair Darin Spease talked with The NCAA News about the success of the championship format change and future changes in the tournament.
  • The Southeastern Conference announced record revenue distribution, with broadcast agreements accounting for much of the increased income.
