Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of September 28-October 2.
- A study of academic support services for student-athletes found that most schools continue to fund such programs, despite cuts in other sections of their athletics budgets.
- The Division I Financial Aid Cabinet made a best-practices document available that outlines suggestions for institutions conducting hearings on student-athlete financial aid renewals or nonrenewals.
- Division I conferences will report their opinions on the effectiveness of the new governance structure through a survey distributed last month. The survey is designed to gauge the level of communication created by the new structure.
- To help improve attendance and other aspects of the Division I Men’s Soccer Championship, the dates for the 2009 championship were changed, moving second-round games to Sunday three weeks before the finals, with the third rounds held on the Sunday two weeks before the finals.
