Detroit joins MAAC Men’s Lacrosse LeagueDetroit’s men’s lacrosse team will play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse League beginning in 2009-10.
Detroit played only one home game in its inaugural season this year and had the smallest roster in Division I with only 26 eligible players, 15 of them freshmen. The program, however, will be eligible for the 2010 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
The addition of Detroit helps a league that is facing the loss of three associate members. Providence will move to the Big East next year, and Mount St. Mary’s and Wagner will play in the Northeast Conference beginning in 2010-11.
“Detroit is an excellent addition to the MAAC, as it is a school that is athletically and academically compatible to the league’s mission,” said MAAC Commissioner Richard Ensor. “The MAAC seeks to provide an environment where men’s lacrosse can continue to develop as a league sport, and the addition of Detroit Mercy continues that commitment.”
Detroit Athletics Director Keri Gaither said she was excited about the new affiliation.
“I am proud that our men’s lacrosse team will be a part of the MAAC tradition,” Gaither said. “It will allow us to have a strong and consistent schedule as well as an opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament.
The MAAC men’s lacrosse league also includes Saint Joseph’s, VMI, Canisius, Manhattan, Marist and Siena.
