DePaul to name court after longtime coach BrunoDePaul will name its basketball court at McGrath Arena after longtime women’s coach Doug Bruno. Athletics Director Jeanne Lenti Ponsetto announced that the name change will take place next season.
Bruno, who has coached the Blue Demons for 24 years, was stunned by the honor.
“I’m shocked, humbled,” he said. “I’m not worthy. I don’t think DePaul owes me anything. I will never forget what happened on this special night.”
Ponsetto announced the honor at the end of the annual Doug Bruno Challenge Dinner fund-raiser, attended by many of Bruno’s friends and family because of a Ponsetto ruse. She had convinced him sales for the event were down and he needed to “help fill the room.”
Wife Patty and sons Bryan, Kevin, David, Brendan, Patrick and Bradley were on hand to see Bruno recognized, along with former DePaul and high school teammates and several former players. He played point guard at DePaul and, after stints coaching in high school, at the professional level and for Loyola (Illinois), he returned to his alma mater for good in 1988.
Bruno served as president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, just the second male coach to lead the organization. He also conducts youth camps and works with both USA Basketball and the WNBA.
