CAP to review Academic Performance ProgramThe Committee on Academic Performance will begin a comprehensive review of the Academic Performance Program, what the committee has accomplished to date and what future changes might be appropriate at its July meeting in Seattle.
The CAP will examine a wide range of academic data gathered through the APP and analyze its impact on the academic performance of student-athletes. When the program (and its Academic Progress Rate) was first conceived about five years ago, it was designed to track the academic progress of student-athletes in a real-time way. By creating penalties for teams whose student-athletes underperformed academically, the program was expected to inspire more schools to support student-athletes in their academic pursuits and lead to higher graduation rates.
As part of its discussion, the CAP will scrutinize APP data and correlating Graduation Success Rate data to see if improved APRs for certain translate to improved GSRs. Part of the discussion will include a review of the 925 (contemporaneous) and 900 (historically based) cut points for penalties. The committee will examine the extent to which various adjustments have affected the correlation of the benchmarks to the Graduation Success Rate.
The committee also will discuss the effect that historically based penalties have had on academic improvement.
No action items are expected from the discussion, but the committee will continue its examination in October with possible action at that time.
