Calhoun wins 800th gameConnecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun won his 800th game Wednesday when the Huskies defeated Marquette, 93-82, in Milwaukee.
In 37 seasons, Calhoun has compiled an 800-339 record and is the seventh Division I men’s basketball coach to reach the 800-win milestone. He joins Bob Knight, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Phelan, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith and Eddie Sutton.
After the game, Calhoun reflected on his career and the coaches he joins in the 800-win club.
“I consider myself somewhat of a historian of the game since my life has revolved so much around sport, particularly basketball,” he said. “When you see the people there, my dad always used to tell me when I wasn’t hanging around the best kids in Dorchester, south Boston: ‘You’re always going to be judged by the company you keep.’ And I looked around at that list, and I’m really happy to be in that company.”
Connecticut is 26-2 this season with a 14-2 Big East record.
