Top-ranked Boston U. scored twice in the final minute of regulation and then tallied an improbable goal in overtime to register a dramatic 4-3 victory over Miami (Ohio) in the championship game of the Men’s Frozen Four.

“Wow, what a hockey game,” said Boston U. coach Jack Parker after Colby Cohen’s shot deflected off of a Miami defender and floated over goalie Cody Reichard’s left shoulder for the game-winner. “What a finish.”

That finish started with a minute left in regulation, with the Terriers trailing, 3-1. Zach Cohen scored to cut the deficit in half, and then 43 seconds later, Nick Bonino found the net to force overtime.

The two goals in fewer than 45 seconds launched the Terriers bench into a riotous celebration, and Parker, who won his 30th tournament game, had to calm his players down before overtime began.

“I told them to relax. They were all excited like they’d just won,” he said. “I told them they had to relax and get ready to win the game. They hadn’t won it yet.”

With 11:47 left in overtime, RedHawks defender Kevin Roeder threw himself to the ice to block Cohen’s shot, but it deflected off his body and wafted toward the goal while Reichard was left searching for what he thought the original trajectory should be.

“It was just a real tough way to go down,” Reichard said on behalf of a team playing for the school’s first championship in any sport.

Miami coach Enrico Blasi added a silver lining by noting that this Miami team was the first to advance to the national semifinals, let alone a championship game. “What the boys did this week, the last couple of weeks, is they made history,” he said. “Hopefully this is a step for more to come. Right now, I just want to make sure that we focus and pay tribute to this team, because nobody gave them a chance a few weeks ago.”

Boston U. found the net first in the championship game, with David Warsofsky feeding Chris Connolly. But Miami’s Gary Steffes scored two minutes into the second period and Tommy Wingles put the RedHawks up by one with seven minutes remaining in the third. Trent Vogelhuber scored his second goal of the season to make the score 3-1 and set the stage for the dramatic finish.
