Two influential organizations have honored NCAA President Myles Brand with significant awards.

The American Council on Education honored Brand, who previously served as president at Indiana University, Bloomington, and the University of Oregon, with its Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime Achievement. Also, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association selected Brand as the recipient of the 2009 WBCA President’s Award.

ACE President Molly Corbett Broad and Senior Vice President Terry Hartle presented the NCAA’s fourth CEO with the lifetime achievement honor at a reception in Detroit on April 3. Brand was president at Indiana from 1994 through 2002 and at Oregon from 1989 to 1994.

The WBCA honor comes on the cusp of the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship final tonight in St. Louis. WBCA President Sherri Coale, coach at Oklahoma, called Brand’s commitment to the women’s game “exemplary.” The award is chosen and presented by the active president of the WBCA to an individual “who has given a tireless commitment to the development of women’s basketball.”

Brand was recognized during the Russell Athletic/WBCA National Coach of the Year Luncheon during the 2009 WBCA convention held in conjunction with the Women’s Final Four.

Past recipients of the award include Sen. Birch Bayh, Betty Jaynes (WBCA), John LaBadd (Sears), Jack North (State Farm), Carol Stiff (ESPN), Robin Roberts (ABC News) and Val Ackerman (WNBA).
