Those tuning in to watch college basketball this week on ESPN’s family of networks will witness some on-the-job training as students will play a role in the game broadcasts.

The “ESPNU Campus Connection Week” started Monday and will continue through Saturday night. In all, 39 men’s and women’s games appearing on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will be a part of the initiative.

For example, Syracuse student Steve Andress handled play-by-play duties for a segment of ESPN’s game featuring the Orange at Pittsburgh on Monday night.

Previously, Andress teamed with analyst and former Duke all-American Jay Williams to do an entire game featuring West Virginia against Miami (Ohio) December 20.

This week, students will receive the opportunity to perform both on-camera and off-camera jobs during the broadcasts.

Some of the highlights during the week include:

  • Tonight’s Nebraska at Oklahoma men’s game will feature 10 Nebraska students with different roles in production of the telecast on ESPNU.
  • St. John’s (New York) senior Anthony Mason Jr., who is out for the season because of a torn tendon in his right foot, will have a courtside reporting role when Cincinnati visits the Red Storm on ESPNU Thursday night.
  • Saturday’s men’s game pitting Maryland at Duke on ESPN will feature Blue Devils’ women’s basketball all-America candidate Abby Waner serving as a courtside reporter.
  •  “ESPNU Campus Connection,” profiles and “ESPNU Extra Credit,” where students will reveal unique aspects of their universities, will also be incorporated into each telecast.
