Sand volleyball tournaments set for April 18

The fourth annual Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships will be held April 18 in Riverside, California.

Many of the nation’s top volleyball female student-athletes will compete in the event that will be televised on CBS College Sports Network.

The tournament will be conducted in a team-style format with each program fielding four two-player teams. The institution will the overall best finish will be crowned the champion of the event.

Nebraska, Texas, Hawaii, Southern California, Utah, San Diego, North Carolina and UC Riverside are among teams scheduled to compete.

The Southeastern Conference will also hold a sand volleyball tournament in Siesta Key, Florida, on April 18. All 11 of the conference’s women’s volleyball-playing institutions will field teams for the event.

A third tournament – the Collegiate Sand Volleyball Challenge – will also take place in Siesta Key. Teams scheduled to compete are South Florida, Central Florida, North Florida, Miami (Florida), Notre Dame, Stetson, Jacksonville, Florida State, Southeastern University, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic and the University of Puerto Rico.

 

Sand volleyball is not yet an official, sanctioned NCAA sport. Division II approved sand volleyball as an emerging sport for women at the NCAA Convention in January, while Division III declined to forward legislation until more information about playing and practice seasons and playing rules could be obtained. The issue remains pending in Division I until the Board of Directors meets April 30 to vote on a proposal.
